AC Replacement Cost in Port St. Lucie, FL
Prices reviewed October 2026
A Port St. Lucie company on SE Port St. Lucie Boulevard puts a central AC or HVAC replacement in the city at $6,500 to $15,000 or more. A second local company, on NW Aljo Court, says a typical Port St. Lucie home comes in around $7,000 to $8,000 for the outdoor unit, the indoor air handler or coil, the line set, electrical work, and startup testing. High-efficiency equipment and harder installs push a job toward the top of the range.
Neither company ties its range to one system size, so this is a whole-home figure rather than a price for a set tonnage.

What affects AC prices in Port St. Lucie
- Prices rose this year. The Palm City company wrote in July 2026 that new central systems on the Treasure Coast were costing about 10 to 12% more than the same equipment a year earlier.
- Age decides repair or replace. The same company suggests talking about a new system once a repair on a unit older than 10 years passes $2,500, which a compressor or coil can do.
- What's in the price varies. The NW Aljo Court company's typical figure already covers the line set and electrical work, but neither local range breaks out duct replacement, so ask for duct work as its own line.
- Salt air matters near the river and the coast. The Palm City company says coastal Florida markets routinely run slightly higher.
AC permits in Port St. Lucie
- Inside city limits, the City of Port St. Lucie Building Department (City Hall, 121 SW Port St. Lucie Blvd.) issues A/C change-out permits. Contractors file through the city's e-permitting portal, and permitting questions go to 772-871-5132.
- The city's A/C change-out application (revised January 2026) covers like-for-like equipment with no duct changes. Both the contractor and the owner sign it in front of a notary, and the A/C checklist asks for an AHRI certificate. Replacing 50% or more of the ductwork needs a separate mechanical permit.
- Inspections are done virtually and have to be scheduled at least one business day ahead. A recorded Notice of Commencement is needed for a job of $15,000 or more, before the first inspection.
- The city's residential fee schedule lists an $86 building fee and a $72 online fee for an A/C change-out, plus small state surcharges. Ask the city which applies to your permit.
- Homes in unincorporated St. Lucie County permit through the county's Building and Code Regulation Division in Fort Pierce, (772) 462-1553. Fort Pierce issues its own permits.
Rebates and help paying in Port St. Lucie
- FPL serves Port St. Lucie. It takes $200 off the invoice for each qualifying unit when an FPL Participating Independent Contractor replaces both the indoor and outdoor units, and its rebate page lists 15.2 SEER2 and above. The program standards also cover heat pumps.
- The city's 2026 home repair program offered 0% deferred loans of up to $50,000, forgiven over 15 years, through the state SHIP program. Applications opened Feb. 18, 2026 and closed 10 minutes later after 100 submissions. The city's SHIP plan lists HVAC among emergency repairs, up to $26,750. The Neighborhood Services FAQs say a pre-application opens online when funding is available.
- The federal tax credit for heat pumps and central AC ended for equipment placed in service after December 31, 2025, according to the IRS.
Rebates and assistance programs open, close, and change as funding allows. Confirm current status with the program before you plan around it. Details reviewed October 2026.
Choosing an AC replacement company in Port St. Lucie
Port St. Lucie asks the homeowner to sign the permit application in front of a notary along with the contractor. That signature is a good moment to check who you're hiring.
- Search the company on MyFloridaLicense.com before you sign anything. A certified air-conditioning or mechanical license is good anywhere in Florida, while a registered one only covers the area where it was issued (s. 489.105).
- Make sure the contractor named on the notarized permit application is the company on your contract, and that its license number matches.
- For FPL's $200 credit, the installer has to be an FPL Participating Independent Contractor, and the credit should show up as a line on the invoice. Ask before you agree to a price.
- Any home improvement contract over $2,500 has to include a notice about Florida's Homeowners' Construction Recovery Fund (s. 489.1425). If yours doesn't, ask why.
Common questions

Two local companies' published prices put a full replacement at $6,500 to $15,000 or more, and one says a typical Port St. Lucie home lands around $7,000 to $8,000. High-efficiency systems and duct work move a quote toward the top.
How do AC inspections work in Port St. Lucie?
The city does A/C change-out inspections virtually. They have to be scheduled at least one business day ahead. If a virtual inspection won't work for your home, call the Building Department at 772-871-5132.
Should I repair my AC or replace it?
A Palm City company lists $1,800 to $3,200 for a compressor and $1,400 to $2,800 for an evaporator coil. It suggests weighing a new system once a repair on a unit older than 10 years passes $2,500.
Can I get help paying for a new AC in Port St. Lucie?
FPL's $200 credit is the option open to most homeowners. The city's 2026 home repair loans, up to $50,000, filled all 100 spots within minutes on Feb. 18, 2026, and the city posts the next round when funding is available.
