What affects AC prices in St. Petersburg
- The permit may or may not be in the price. The Tampa company bills the permit separately, while the 2nd Street North company includes it in every install quote and says it typically runs $100 to $250 depending on system size and scope.
- Duct work is priced per run. The Tampa company charges $639 to $859 per duct drop when ducts need replacing.
- Repairs can buy time. The 29th Avenue North company lists $800 to $2,500 or more for a compressor, $400 to $700 for an evaporator coil, $150 to $300 for a capacitor, and $150 to $250 for a contactor.
- Inverter equipment roughly doubles the entry price. The Tampa company's inverter tier starts at $13,999, against $7,141 for its standard tier.
AC permits in St. Petersburg
- The city's Construction Services and Permitting Division works out of the Municipal Services Center at One 4th St. N. Applications and inspection scheduling run through the city's online permit portal.
- Florida's $7,500 permit exemption doesn't help here: the city says it excludes mechanical work and properties in a flood hazard area.
- After a flood, repairing or replacing mechanical equipment still needs a permit, according to the city's flooding page.
- Homes in unincorporated Pinellas County permit through the county's Building and Development Review Services at 440 Court St. in Clearwater, (727) 464-3888. The county requires a Notice of Commencement for a like-for-like mechanical change-out over $15,000, and owner-builders must appear in person with a state ID (county requirements).
Rebates and help paying in St. Petersburg
- Duke Energy Florida serves St. Petersburg. Duke pays $300 for an AC replacement at 15.2 SEER2, $500 to replace a heat pump at 15.2 SEER2 and 7.5 HSPF2, and $600 or $1,000 to swap electric strip heat for a heat pump at 15.2 or 16 SEER2. A licensed, insured contractor has to do the work.
- Duke's prerequisites call for a free Home Energy Check before work begins, or within the past 24 months. The job must be permitted and inspected. If the AC failed and had to be replaced right away, Duke's replacement page allows the check within 12 months after the install.
- The city's Rebates for Affordable Residential Rehabs pays back up to 40% of pre-approved construction costs and lists HVAC replacement as eligible. Households must be at or below 120% of area median income, the minimum investment is $10,000, and the application period was open in October 2026.
- Pinellas County's Home Repair Loan covers air conditioning but excludes homes in St. Petersburg, and it closed to new applications in May 2026. The city's own housing rehab program lists roofs, electrical, and plumbing but doesn't mention AC.
- The federal tax credit for heat pumps and central AC ended for equipment placed in service after December 31, 2025, according to the IRS.
Rebates and assistance programs open, close, and change as funding allows. Confirm current status with the program before you plan around it. Details reviewed October 2026.
Choosing an AC replacement company in St. Petersburg
Duke Energy's rebates here can reach $1,000, but only when the steps happen in the right order.
- Book Duke's free Home Energy Check before the company starts work. Without it, a planned replacement doesn't qualify for the rebate.
- Have the company pull the City of St. Petersburg mechanical permit in its own name. Duke only pays on permitted, inspected work, and the city doesn't exempt AC jobs under $7,500.
- Many Tampa Bay companies cross the bridge to work in St. Pete. A state-certified license covers that; a registered license only covers the area where it was issued (s. 489.105). Look it up on MyFloridaLicense.com.
- Keep the deposit small. A contractor who takes more than 10% up front has to apply for the permit within 30 days and start within 90 days after it's issued, unless you agree in writing to longer (s. 489.126).
